Introduction about Perak

Perak, or better known as the Land of Grace is the second largest state here in Peninsular Malaysia. The total population here in this 21000 square kilometer state falls roughly around 2 million people and counting since the year 2000. Aside from having Ipoh serving as the state capital and Kuala Kangsar serving as the royal capital, there are another eight main administrative districts here in Perak where these eight districts include Batang Padang, Hilir Perak, Hulu Perak, Kinta, Krian, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Larut, Matang and Selama.

Early in the 16th century, Perak was constantly being threatened by outside force due to the fact where Perak, named after the word tin, is in fact rich in one of the most valuable natural resources at that time which was none other than tin itself. Under constant threats from the external forces and as well as internal riots between people who wants to control the profitable tin mine, British at last intervened in the administrative affairs of Perak in order to put a stop to all the external threats and internal power struggles. Shortly after British had taken charge, one of the British Resident that was assigned there was cruelly assassinated by the local chiefs who were afraid of losing their powers. However, with the assassination of the British Resident and the signing of the Pangkor Engagement afterwards, Perak soon started to rise economically under the careful administration of the second British Resident where in addition to that, he was the first person to have introduced the rubber tree to Perak.

Tracking back to the years during the British colonial period, the economy structure of Perak were forged solely by tin mining and rubber tree plantations, however, ever since the declension in the value of tin and rubber trees, Perak has now changed the state’s economy directions from mining and plantation to industrial and manufacturing. Aside from these, tourism is also one of the main economies of Perak as Perak is filled with various interesting locations such as beaches, islands, mountains and not to forget, caves. In addition to that, Perak is also known as one of the food paradise here in Peninsular Malaysia as Perak produces one of the best Hor Fun (Flat rice noodle), Dim Sum, white coffee and as well as various local snacks.

Many said that Perak is one of the best places for retirement and in a certain point of view, what many said may well enough be true. The reason behind this is because unlike other states like Selangor or Penang, Perak is a moderately paced state and in addition to that, due to the fact where Perak is being surrounded by numerous tall mountains, the residents residing at Perak can surely enjoy breaths of fresher air everyday.

All in all, this nostalgic state is one of the well rounded states here in Malaysia where until today, the state continues to grow both socially and economically. For the travelers who yearn for a slightly more relaxed yet exciting retreat, Perak should definitely be on top of the list.
