Negeri Sembilan's Historical and Cultural Attractions

Historical and Cultural Attractions in Negeri Sembilan

Seri Menanti Old Palace (Royal Museum)
This enchanting old palace which is located at Seri Menanti was in fact built back in the year 1902 and it was completed three years after that. This old palace is indeed fascinating as this five storey palace was built entirely with hardwood timbers which are extracted from the forest all around Negeri Sembilan. In addition to that, the second miracle for this old palace is that the Seri Menanti Old Palace was built without using any screw or nail. In between the period of 1908 and 1931, the Seri Menanti Old Palace was the royal residence of the Yang DiPertuan Besar Tuanku Muhammad. Aside from occupying the third floor as his royal highness residence, the fourth floor was used as the royal treasury and repository of royal records. The interior and exterior decorations of the Seri Menanti Old Palace will surely leave a deep impression to the visitors as the old palace is indeed a work of art during the early days.

Handicraft Center
The Handicraft Center is one of the eight nationwide branches of the Malaysia Handicraft Development Corporation. For this branch which is located at the Negeri Sembilan state, it is the main production center for bamboo, rattan and as well as glass based crafts. Here in the Handicraft Center, most of the handicrafts are mass produced in order to serve their commercial purposes. Aside from that, a Skill Training Program was developed so that more qualified skilled workers, artisans and as well as craftsmen can be produced annually. Inside at the Handicraft Center, the visitor can further appreciate the artistic reflection of the culture of the local community by going behind the scenes so that the visitor can watch the transformation process of rattan into other artistic products such as gifts, walking sticks, trays, egg baskets, chairs, tables and sofas as well. Besides the rattan products, the visitor can also witness the process of glass being shaped creatively into other souvenir products such as keris, bullock cart and as well as bird swing.

State Museum, Crafts and Culture Complex
The State Museum, Crafts and Culture Complex which is located at Seremban was established during the year 1983 and it was officially opened to the public on the year 1986. In this complex, there are several buildings such as the State Museum, Teratak Perpatih, Rumah Negeri Sembilan (Negeri Sembilan House) and as well as the Top Spinning Court. Firstly for the State Museum, it was originally the Ampang Tinggi Palace where it was built back in the year 1861 by Yam Tuan Imam Sri Menanti. This place was in fact built as a gift to Tunku Chindai where she is the daughter of the 5th Yang Di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan. Just like the Seri Menanti Old Palace, the Ampang Tinggi Palace (State Museum) was built without using any form of nails or screws. After many years of changing hands, this fine architectural building was then dismantled and moved from Kuala Pilah to the new location, which is the current Arts and Culture Complex. Nowadays, this museum houses various collections of artifacts found from the Royal Family such as weaponry and silver ware. Outside of the State Museum, it is being surrounded by British and as well as Malay made cannon known as the “Ekor Lotong” and “Lela”. Aside from the State Museum, there is this Teratak Perpatih House which is located nearby to the State Museum. The Teratak Perpatih House is an eye catching building due to the reason where for the roof design of the Teratak Perpatih House, it mimics the two pointed ends of a buffalo’s horns where this buffalo horn mimic is generally a typical design of a Minangkabau traditional house. Within the Teratak Perpatih House, various exhibits or crafts such as porcelain, woodcraft and batik can be clearly seen. Besides the Teratak Perpatih House, there is another building here in this complex where this building is known as the Negeri Sembilan House. Originally, this house which was built by a Malay prince during the year 1898 was referred to as the “Ghost House” by the local villagers. Last but not least, there is another attraction here in the complex and this attraction is known as the Top-Spinning Court. The purpose of this square fenced area is for top spinning and in addition to that, there are three replicas of megaliths found in Pengkalan Kempas where these three replicas contain manly animal related carvings.
