Malaysia Telekom

In Malaysia, Telekom Malaysia is one of the largest telecommunication companies in Malaysia and in addition to that, Telekom Malaysia has a near definite control over the fixed line network, the narrowband and the broadband internet service. Telekom Malaysia further expanded their business when one of the mobile telecommunication providers known as Celcom was acquired by Telekom Malaysia.

In the early days, Telekom Malaysia is known as Jabatan Telekom Malaysia and it is also a government based agency. However, during 12th October 1984, Jabatan Telekom Malaysia was incorporated as a privatized company going under the name Syarikat Telekom Malaysia Berhad. On top of that, Telekom Malaysia officially changes its global brand from Telekom Malaysia to TM during April 2005.

At the year 1990 during the 7th of November, Telekom Malaysia or TM was officially listed on the main board of the Bursa Malaysia Securities Berhad. Currently until today, two of the largest substantial shareholders of Telekom Malaysia include both Khazanah Nasional Berhad (35.14%) and as well as Employees Provident Fund Board (13.41%). Some of the core business areas of Telekom Malaysia include voice services, data services, enterprise resource planning, internet services, mobile services, broadcast, specialized network service (SNS) and lastly, satellite, maritime and radio services. Instead of running all of the core business under one brand name, Telekom Malaysia has a few subsidiaries operating under them and these subsidiaries are known as VADS (Managed Network Service), Celcom (mobile telecommunication provider), TM Net (Narrowband and Broadband internet service provider) and last but not least, Multimedia University (education, research and development).

Besides having a wide variety of local core businesses, Telekom Malaysia or TM is also actively involved in numerous oversea investment, particularly in the area of telecommunications. For examples, one of the pioneers in the oversea investment of Telekom Malaysia is known as the Dialog Telekom Limited which is located at Sri Lanka. In the year 1995, Telekom Malaysia invested in the mentioned company and from there, Dialog Telekom Limited started to offer GSM cellular services at Sri Lanka and the company was Sri Lanka’s pioneer in digital cellular network. Aside from that, Telekom Malaysia is also investing on numerous other countries across different continents and some of these countries are known as Republic of Guinea, Republic of Malawi, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia and last but not least, Indonesia.

In addition to well diversify business activities, Telekom Malaysia is also playing an active role in the both the education sector and research sector of Malaysia. Firstly, Telekom Malaysia founded some of these institutes such as the Multimedia University, Telekom Smart School and as well as the Multimedia College. Aside from that, there is also a charity foundation known as the Yayasan TM which is dedicated to further improve the education of students and professionals alike. Lastly, there is also a company known as Telekom Research & Development Sdn Bhd and this company is responsible for the research and development activities of Telekom Malaysia.

Setting aside both business activities and others, Telekom Malaysia is also actively involved in some of Malaysia’s social events such as the sponsorship for Le Tour De Langkawi 2005. The Le Tour De Langkawi is one of the world’s most prestigious cycling races and many cyclists from all around the world have been constantly participating in this renowned event since the early days. In addition to that, Telekom Malaysia and its subsidiaries known as Celcom also nobly stepped forward and donated a significant sum of donations in order to assist the Tsunami devastated areas.
