Getting Around in Kuala Lumpur
Cars & Taxis
Car rental is available from budget car to luxury limo, either self drive or chauffeur driven. Roads in Kuala Lumpur are in good condition and traveling around by self driving can be pleasant enough if the traffic is smooth. But it has been a norm that KL is always having heavy traffic, never get surprise even if you see vehicles are bumper to bumper in a four lane highway during rush hours. Make sure you got yourself a map if you plan to drive by yourself. Do expect to make toll payments on certain highways.
There are two kinds of taxis in KL – metered and non metered. Metered taxis fare is charged either based on the distance traveled or time consumed during traffic jams.

| RM0.10 | Every 200 metres |
Every 45 seconds |
| Extra passenger RM0.20 per person |
| Luggage stored in the boot RM1.00 each |
| Additional RM1.00 for telephone booking |
Taxi are available round the clock but there will be a 50% surcharge on the metered fare from midnight to 6 a.m..
Non metered taxis are normally operated at railway station which using the coupon system. You will need to pay and get the coupon before boarding. The fares are normally higher compared to metered taxis.
KL taxis have unfortunately received much criticism and the problems are still unable to be solved. Due to the heavy traffic problems, taxis drivers increasingly refuse passengers for a particular destination or charge a fix rate for the trip without using the meter. There are also lot’s of complaints that KL taxis drivers don’t really know the places well.
Buses
Buses are cheap and efficient travel mode moving around. Buses in KL are normally comfortable and air-conditioned. There are few bus operators running different routes which cover almost every part of KL.
Some bus operators adopt the “pay-as-you-board” method, small ticket machine are installed to collect coins and issue tickets. The ticket machine does not return change, so be sure to have enough coins.
Few bus operators charge a flat rate no matter where to go, Intrakota – grey in colour bus charge a flat rate of RM0.90. Other bus operators fare based on the number of fare stages and each stage is 2 KM. Ask the bus driver if you are unsure how much to pay.
