Introduction about Sarawak

The Sarawak state of Malaysia is situated on the north west of the Borneo Island and in addition to that, Sarawak is known as the largest state in the whole of Malaysia with a land area of 124450 square kilometer. Within the vast land area, there are a total of 28 different ethnic groups with a total population count of 2176800 people. For the majority of the populations in Sarawak, the main ethnic groups is known as the Ibans and aside from the Ibans, the Chinese, the Bidayuh, the Melanau and the Malays are also considered as the majority of the ethnic group here in Sarawak.

In Sarawak, the capital state is known as the Kuching district whereas aside from Kuching, there are another ten main administrative divisions here and these ten divisions are known as Samarahan, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Mukah, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri and Limbang. Ever since the days after the official formation of Sarawak and Malaysia, the Brunei country constantly claims that the Limbang division actually belongs to the Brunei territories and not part of the territories of Malaysia.

For the histories of the Sarawak state, ever since the 19th century, Sarawak is considered to be a loosely governed territory under the ruling of the Brunei Sultanate. From the time when the first appointment of James Brooke as the governor of the Sarawak state during the year 1841 and followed by the Rajah title awarded by the Sultan of Brunei, the territories of the Brooke reign continued to expand rapidly. The descendants of the Brooke have continued to rule over Sarawak until the year 1941 when the Japanese invaded Sarawak. Shortly after the end of the Japanese ruling, the British took over the administration and the ruling of the Sarawak state. However, as the local peoples of the Sarawak resisted strongly the cession to Britain, the first British governor at the Sarawak state was assassinated in a rather dramatic way. After a series of resistances and riots, despite the opposition from the majority of the populations, the Sarawak state became an autonomous state of the federation of Malaysia on the year 1963.

As for the economy, the Sarawak state generally depends greatly on the various resources available within the state. For example, the liquefied natural gas and the petroleum are one of the main productions and contributors towards the economy of the Sarawak state. Aside from that, Sarawak is also famously known as one of the world’s largest hardwood timber exporters. However, until recent years, with the rapidly plummeting numbers of forestry, the Sarawak state government has decided to impose strict log-production quotas as by doing so, the state government can ensure that the forestry will continue to be sustainable for years to come. Besides all these, the Sarawak state has roughly 32% from the total land area where these 32% of land areas are classified to be highly suitable for agricultural activities. However, despite this reason, only 9% of these lands are planted with productive permanent corps whereas for the rest of the land areas, they are mostly occupied by hill padi. Starting on the 80s, the Sarawak state is determined to remake their current economy into a more industrialized economy. Under the tremendous amount of effort contributed by the state government of the Sarawak state, the results of such can be clearly seen as more and more manufacturers and as well as high tech industries are now investing their business in Sarawak.

In certain sense, both the Sarawak state and the Sabah state are quite similar in many ways. One of the similarities is that both the Sarawak and the Sabah state are rich in various natural resources. So eventually, eco tourism became one of the major tourist attractions here in the Sarawak state. Aside from these wonderful natural attractions such as forests and beaches, the wide and well diverse cultures of the local ethnic groups within the Sarawak state also act as one of the major tourist attractions.

All in all, the Sarawak state is a scenic state which is rich in various natural resources and attractions. In addition to that, the local peoples within the Sarawak state are also very friendly and warm hearted.
