Introduction about Sabah

Written by: Edmund Ang The Sabah state is one of the most multi racial and multi cultural states in Malaysia as in Sabah alone, there are more than 30 different races and 80 different dialects. For geographical information of the state, Sabah is located at West Malaysia or better known as the Island of Borneo. Aside from that, Sarawak of Malaysia and Kalimantan of Indonesia are also the neighbouring countries of the Sabah state. Aside from that, the Sabah state is known as the second largest state at the whole of Malaysia where the total land area of Sabah exceeds more than 73000 square kilometers.

In Sabah, the capital of the state is known as Kota Kinabalu and in addition to that, there are another 22 main administrative districts here in the state. All of these 22 administrative districts are known as Beaufort, Beluran, Keningau, Kinabatangan, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Kuala Penyu, Kudat, Kunak, Lahad Datu, Nabawan, Papar, Penampang, Pitas, Ranau, Sandakan, Semporna, Sipitang, Tambunan, Tawau, Tenom and Tuaran.

In the year 1881, Sabah was officially taken over by the British North Borneo Company and because of this reason, Sabah became a protectorate of the British Empire. During the year 1946, the ruling of the British North Borneo Company has ended and soon after that, Sabah became the colony of the north Borneo before it was being admitted into the Malaysian federation of the year 1963. Ever since Sabah joined the Malaysian federation, there has been accusation by Philippine where Philippine claimed that for some reason, the whole of Sabah is actually part of the Philippine’s territory and not Malaysia’s territory.

In the earlier years of the Sabah state, lumber is the main dependant for the economy within the state. However, as the productions of lumber are slow decreasing due to rapid depletion, the Sabah state now had switched to another alternative, which is palm oil. Aside from palm oil, the tourism industries are now the second largest contributor to the economy of the Sabah state so therefore, the importance of tourism within the Sabah state can not be ignored. One interesting fact about the economy of the Sabah state is that, during the year 1970, Sabah was the second richest state amongst the whole of Malaysia, however, despite having so many different types of natural resources, Sabah is now currently the poorest state with the highest level of poverty in Malaysia. Many believe where part of the reason for this problem is the inadequate distribution of wealth by between the state and the federal government. Almost 95% of the total revenues generated by the Sabah state went to the federal government with the remaining 5% for local needs.

For the tourism industries in Sabah, most of the attractions within the state are based on econ tourism. The reason behind this is because the Sabah state has many wonderful natural attractions such as Mountain Kinabalu, the tallest mountain in Malaysia, Pulau Sipadan, the famous island for scuba diving, Danum Valley Conservation Area, the wilderness rainforest and many other more. One thing for sure is that, the Sabah state has many wonderful attractions that will satisfy every different need of the travelers.
